How to prepare for the city driving test

A plan for preparing for the city driving test: practical lessons, getting to know the routes, reviewing mistakes and checking the official information.

Author: PassDrive · checked

Preparing for the city driving test brings together real driving practice, getting to know the route and understanding your own mistakes. This guide will help you put those steps in order.

First assess your starting level

Write down what you can do independently and where you need your instructor's help. Lane choice, observing your surroundings and making decisions in different situations may each need different exercises. Fit the preparation plan to your needs.

Choose a city and get to know the routes

Use the public catalogue to see the practice routes of the city you want. On each diagram mark the sections you do not understand. Check the current official routes and the organisational matters of the exam with the Service Agency.

Practise step by step

On the first attempt, get to know the road. Then focus on the decisions you found difficult. When reviewing the results, ask yourself: what did I not notice, why did I make this decision, and what will I change next time?

Combine practical and online preparation

The simulator will help you get to know the road and repeat situations. Lessons with an instructor are needed to practise driving a real car and judging your surroundings. The two formats have different purposes.

Before the exam, check the official information

Check the booking, the documents required, the fee, the admission conditions and the marking rules in force on the official page of the Service Agency. This guide does not replace the exam's current regulations and does not guarantee a pass.
