City driving lessons and online preparation

How to choose city driving lessons, what to ask your instructor and how to use the route simulator alongside real practice.

Author: PassDrive · checked

City driving lessons mean practice in a real car. PassDrive is an addition to lessons: here you can get to know a route in advance and prepare questions to work on with your instructor.

What to ask your instructor before the first lesson

Find out the length of the lesson, its cost, the car's gearbox type and the meeting place. Ask how the learning will be planned around your experience and what happens if a lesson is postponed. A low price alone cannot tell you how useful a lesson will be.

Before the lesson: get to know the route

Choose a city in the public route catalogue. On the diagram, follow the order of the road sections. The aim is not to memorise the turns: note where you need a better understanding of the signs, lane choice or a junction. Bring these questions to your instructor.

In the lesson: pay attention to the real world

A road seen virtually may differ from the real one. In practice be guided by the signs and markings in force and by your instructor's directions. In a real car the sense of speed, visibility and working the controls each take experience of their own.

After the lesson: turn a mistake into an exercise

Choose one or two points your instructor drew your attention to. Repeat the situation in the simulator, look over the mistakes saved in your account and discuss the result at the next lesson. Understanding different situations is better than driving one route over and over.

How to judge the price of lessons

Compare offers of the same length and conditions. Find out whether fuel is included in the price and what the postponement rule is. The amount on PassDrive's prices page concerns online access only; we do not set instructors' prices.
